Canadian Olympic Team Coach Joel Filliol on Olympic selections
Canadian Olympic Team Coach Joel Filliol has posted some thoughts on his blog on the Canadian team selection and the recent controversy within the triathlon community…
=====
I posted this on Slowtwitch just now, and I imagine there are some people out there wondering if I was going to weigh in on the Canadian team selection, so here you go:
Joel Filliol here, Canadian Olympic Team Coach, I also sit on the olympic selection committee (High performance committee), and I am also personal coach to Simon, Colin, Kyle and Paul, as well as running Brent’s swim program.
I want to make this clear: this is my team, my decisions and I am accountable for every step of the process, including the results we have in Beijing. Its my ass on the line if things don’t go well. If the athletes don’t perform in Beijing, they move on to the next race, I on the other hand may be looking for a new job.
You and others may disagree with my decisions, but don’t make it personal with the athletes. Simon doesn’t run trican (although his results alone have made it possible for us to support a whole national team program). I stand by the team selections and make no apologies that we are going for gold and we are behind Simon 100%. Colin and Paul were selected to give us the strongest team possible, and I am very confident that Paul will also have an excellent overall individual result while contributing to the team effort for a medal.
