Whistler 50 Relay & Ultra Race Reports

Below is a list of race reports from the inaugural Whistler 50 Relay and Ultra. More will be added as they become available.

  • Darin Bentley – Whistler 50 Mile - See, what did I tell you about who would win?? The last post I predicted Chris Downie would beat me. I can see into the future and it was there I saw Chris winning the race. I really have to start using this gift in other ways besides predictiing race winners. Okay, I admit I slowed down enough so that at mile 35 he passed me and stayed ahead until the finish. I knew how bad he wanted to win so what was I supposed to do?
  • Chris DownieWhistler 50 Mile Ultra Race Recap – I have not logged many miles on the road since I started trail running three years ago. For me there is no comparison between the two pursuits – on trails in the mountains is where I would rather be. That being said, there is a certain zen attached to road running. To maintain a fast, consistent pace for miles on asphalt requires a different type of strength and discipline. Stride length stays the same for the most part and the body becomes a metronome…
  • Ron Adams (RD for Whistler 50 Mile Ultra) - Ultra Race Report - The Whistler bears have not yet gone into hibernation. Every runner in the inaugural running of the Whistler 50 had a bear story. Fortunately, the bears were not interested in the runners and nobody missed a step (well … maybe a few steps). The course was designed to be a fast course and the runners delivered with the lead changing hands in very close contests in both the men’s and women’s races…
  • Dust and Dreams - Sole Survivors Outlast the Whistler 50 – This weekend I participated in the inaugural Whistler 50, an 8-person 50 mile (80km) Relay or Solo UltraMarathon in Whistler, British Columbia. All week I anxiously checked the weather forecast because iseemed likely that it would snow on the day of the race. Driving the two hours up to Whistler was like driving out of autumn into winter but although we had below freezing temperatures on the morning of the race it was a gorgeous clear, sunny day…
  • Hassan-Lotfi-Pour - Whislter 50 miles ultra - Do you know how stubborn you could be, how long you could ignore the pain and reality? This year was the inaugural of the Whistler 50 miles relay in Whistler the home of the 2010 Olympic Mountain events. My trip to and from whistler was less than a day, I left North Vancouver just past 2 AM and I back in North Van just past 3 PM. While I was in whistler my mind was so occupied with my nagging knee pain and the goal of finishing race the I never felt or thought about the energy or the buzz that 2010 Olympic left behind…
  • Robert’s Ramblings on Running - Whistler 50 race report - A relay race. I haven’t done a relay since since my high school track days where we do 3x 1000m or 4x 400m. I also recall a 70+ km three legged race close to Cologne in 1985, but I had forgotten about the special dynamics of a relay…
  • Heather Runs - Whistler 50 Mile - If this run was a hotel, I would call it a” 5 star”. It was very luxurious running. Great information,  organization, trail markings, aid stations, volunteers, and even port a potty heaven- you name it, you were well cared for. Being a newbie to the 50 mile distance, I highly recommend this run…
  • Triathlete Tim - My First Ultra - 50 miles or 80 kilometres is a long way to run/walk. I never doubted heading into the day that I wouldn’t finish. That confidence comes from years of training and racing. While I believe that more people are capable of completing an ultra than they realize, it still requires doing enough work so that it’s a positive experience…
  • My run spot - Inaugural Whistler 50 RelayOverall, the race was a great success. With over 150 teams and 46 ultra runners participating, there was lots of excitement in the air and spirits were never low. Here are my highlights and lowlights for the weekend…
  • Whistler Question (written by Eric MacKenzie) -  Hundreds trample trails in first Whistler 50 Relay & Ultra - Squamish’s Jen Segger wasn’t the first woman across the line in the Whistler 50 Relay and Ultra on Saturday (Nov. 5), but she took top spot among female competitors in the run’s the 80-kilometre solo Ultra distance with a bit of a break partway through the course…
  • Nicola GildersleeveWhistler 50 mile Race Report! haha, I sit here and laugh because it has been forever since I have done a race longer than 50km. In fact, Western States 100 in June of 2010 was my last long race.  This year has been a bit interesting as far as my running is concerned and I have had to DNF, due to ankle injuries, more than I would like. It’s felt as though I had DNF’d more races this year than completed so I was more than excited crossing the finish line at the Whistler 50 miler this past Saturday!
  • Jen Segger Challenge By ChoiceWhistler 50miler Report + Off-Season Thoughts - On a last minute decision, I decided to hit the Whistler 50miler, a new race that replaced the Haney to Harrison this year. Being that it was in my backyard and I haven’t run in Whistler for a while, I needed some miles and I thought that this would be a great way to get them in. I have to admit, my motivation for long runs has been down a bit recently (I think its the weather) and with the Honolulu Marathon a month away, I do need some pavement time…
  • Margreet DietzWhistler 50 Ultra race report – Saturday’s Whistler 50 was an awesome experience and I hope to capture it in a longer race report soon. For now, I am both too tired and too busy.
  • Heather’s Running AdventuresWhistler 50 Mile – If this run was a hotel, I would call it a” 5 star”. It was very luxurious running. Great information,  organization, trail markings, aid stations, volunteers, and even port a potty heaven- you name it, you were well cared for. Being a newbie to the 50 mile distance, I highly recommend this run…
  • Trail TripperA Little Vindication - From an over all event stand point the new Whistler 50 is a huge improvement over the H2H event it replaced. In particular from the Ultra marathon participant perspective…
