Spartan Race, the World Leader in Obstacle Racing, Returns to Vancouver on June 1st

Spartan Vancouver 2012Spartan Race, recognized as the world’s leading obstacle racing event, will return to the Lower Mainland on June 1st, at a new location, Mount Seymour.   The Spartan Race is the fastest growing obstacle race in North America, and more than 500,000 participants are expected to race in over 60 Spartan races held across the Americas, Europe and Australia in 2013.

“We’re excited to be holding the race at Mount Seymour this year and we are looking forward to setting up a challenging course which will test the strength, endurance and ingenuity of all of our participants”, says Dean Stanton, Director of Spartan Race Western Canada.  However, as always, course details will be kept secret until race day.

Thousands of competitors and spectators representing every walk of life, age and stage and varying degrees of athletic abilities are expected to converge on Mount Seymour on June 1st to tackle the Spartan race, presented by Tri 1 Events.

The Spartan Sprint race will combine 5 km of trail running with 15 or more obstacles which can include jumping over fire, climbing 8 foot walls and crawling through mud.  Heats of up to 250 competitors will start every 30 minutes from 8am, and a Spartan Kids Adventure Race will take place at noon for kids aged 5-10.  The day-long events will culminate with a lively festival featuring competitions, awards, music, a beer garden and an after-party.

Spartan Races are designed for everyone, from beginners to hardcore warriors and marathon runners alike; the mission is to get everyone off the couch, to have fun and cross the finish line. All participants need is a little physical conditioning and a taste for adventure.  “This is not an extreme sporting event”, elaborates Dean.  “It’s all about having fun, getting muddy and doing something exciting and new”.
