A Club Fat Ass run featuring a mind-numbing running interval session on a fairly big mountain. Officially held twice a year. Wide dirt and gravel access road. No traffic. 15k per lap. NEW RACE COURSE HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY MEASURED AS A

This new scenic route starts along the seawall adjacent to the farthest west parking lot along Marine Drive at Spanish Banks. All Divas will run east along the path until just east of Locarno Concession (at Trimble and Marine) then loop back west to the very west end of the trail along Spanish Banks before circling back to finish.

The 10 km route is two loops of this route.

This running event memorializes Mr. Gavin Fletcher who died at too young an age. He was a well known sports columnist, a member of ROC, a husband and father.

His family values were paramount but his love of good fun competition in sports was unequalled. It is with this intent that we fashion The Fletcher’s Challenge, held each year on Good Friday open to both runners and walkers.

It is about participation, having fun and enjoying some physical activity with your family. A big draw is the cookie run for kids around Westwood Lake. However; cookies are not the exclusive domain of the kids, as all runners and walkers are treated to some pretty good home-baked treats after their run/walk!

Registration can be done online or through a direct mail in. Applications are always available at Frontrunners Nanaimo as well. For more information contact Dan Brady directly at danbrady@shaw.ca. Dan was a personal friend of Gavin and is currently the race coordinator.

Race Course Description

We can’t tell you the exact route as it is a kept a bit of a secret until race day! What we can tell you is that each year we change the route in order to show you a little more of the trails that our friend Gavin liked to run. We can also tell you that it is fairly safe to assume the following while out running on this race course:

You will run about 10km or 12km
You will run a few hills
You will get to check out some great vistas
You will run some pretty sweet and fast flowing single track
You will encounter a few rocks, roots, and mud puddles along the way
You will have to cross through at least one or two streams (nothing too deep) before getting to the finish line
Oh, and if you are really lucky you might even encounter a fairy or two along the trail that will be offering out cookies… this is an old school unaided trail race. The only water on this route is the water you carry with you or the water you run through. The trail race starts and finishes on the second beach at Westwood Lake.

Q. Do walkers use the same route as the runners?

A. No. Walkers have the benefit of only having to walk around the Westwood Lake trail, which is 6km in length.

Where – Start & finish at White Pine Beach at Sasamat Lake Regional Park, near Port Moody BC

Race day schedule – Check-in starting at 6:00am, briefing at 7:15am, start at 7:30am

Course – West coast rainforest trails and gravel service roads with “some roots, some rocks, some mud & some nice trail”

#2 Buntzen North +/- 15k
#3 Buntzen South +/- 23k Drop bags
#4 Equestrian Lot +/- 30k
#5 Eagle Mtn Rd +/- 37k *** Cutoff 2:30pm

Volunteers – Some volunteers will be on the course longer than the runners, without volunteers this run will not exists…….be very kind to them !!

Washrooms – Start/ finish area and Buntzen South Aid Station

Pacers & pets – Not permitted

Cutoff – 2:30 pm at Eagle Mtn Road, Aid Station #5. Runners arriving at A.S. #5 after 2:30 pm will be offered a ride back to Sasamat Lake.

Entry limits – March 26, 2010 deadline or maximum 150 entries will be accepted, no refunds, no wait list and no day of race entry. Entries are not transferable.

Confirmation of Entry – will be posted in late March

Greening up – Paper cups will not be available at Aid Stations, nor at the start finish area, exception # 5 & # 6 for cola. Please use your water bottle(s) for fluids on course!!

Aid station food – the usual ultra stuff, if you prefer something special we suggest that you carry it with you or leave it in your drop bag.

Awards – At the finish area at 2:30pm

Post race – BBQ for runners and volunteers. Bring your own lawn chair and plate & utensils. Alcohol is not permitted in the Regional Park.

Dropping out – Runners who decide to withdraw from the race must report their decision to the Aid Station Captain. Please do not go home without reporting that you have withdrawn.

Today, the event has grown to include hundreds of competitors and volunteers. While the event is organized and run by volunteers, many local businesses have been instrumental in its ongoing success through sponsorships. Since 1988, the race has been named for its major sponsor… Interior Savings.

From the slopes of Big White to the shores of City Park in Kelowna, teams of up to seven people and soloists race others and the stopwatch over six legs that span 95 kilometers. The legs, in order of completion, are: alpine skiing, nordic skiing, mountain biking, road cycling, running, and canoeing/kayaking. Two people are required for the canoeing leg. The race is a relay and all team members are required to help bring the canoe equipment across the finish line.
