A runner in Sunday’s Bazan Bay 5K in Sidney died after he appeared to go into cardiac arrest.

The 67-year-old man from Courtenay collapsed shortly after the 9 a.m. race began.

Karen Irvine was about four runners away from the man when he went down near the one-kilometre mark of the race.

“It appeared that he stumbled” and struck his head, Irvine said.

Irvine and several other runners rushed to his aid and found he was not breathing.

One runner began doing chest compressions, while Irvine, a lab technician, attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. They continued with the resuscitation attempts until B.C. Ambulance paramedics arrived.

The man was taken to Saanich Peninsula Hospital, where he later died.

Irvine did not know the man but said he looked fit.

Cpl. Kerry Howse of the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP said the man’s friend, a doctor, told police the two drove down from Courtenay together and he appeared to be in good health.

He ran every day for 45 minutes, the doctor told police, and did not have any pre-existing medical conditions.

Police said they won’t be certain whether the man suffered a heart attack until an autopsy is conducted.

Howse said the incident was unexpected, given the cool temperatures and that it was near the beginning of the run.

The man’s name is not being released until his family can be notified.

The overall winner of the race was Olympic triathlete Simon Whitfield, who finished in a course record of 14 minutes, 36 seconds.

Victoria, British Columbia – The legendary Canadian age-group running phenom, Maurice Tarrant has officially committed to compete in the inaugural ʻQʼs Victoria Track Seriesʼ for the entire 2010 season. The Series begins Saturday, May 1st and continues through to Saturday, August 21st 2010. All 8 meets over this 16-week period-of-time begin at 6:30 PM.

Since moving to Victoria from England in 1981, Tarrant has set 42 Canadian age-class records. Currently, Maurice Tarrant is in the midst of racing to set Canadian age-group records in the 80-plus category, on the roads, during the Vancouver Island Race Series and the Timex Race Series, which share a few events including the Pioneer 8k where in January he broke the previous record set by training partner Jim Sargent, by 8 minutes.

The Qʼs Victoria Track Series is different than the Vancouver Island Race Series in that races are run exclusively on the track as opposed to the roads and involve shorter distances including 800, 1500, 3000 and 5000 metres as well as the
classic mile event (1609 metres or 4 laps of the track).

The entire series will be contested at the Jack Wallace Memorial Track at Oak Bay High School, which is located behind the Oak Bay Recreation Centre. Races are open to runners of all abilities and there are elite-class race opportunities available in equal proportion.

For information on the Qʼs Victoria Track Series visit the series website at www.victoriatrackseries.ca. Contact: Christopher Kelsall, Series Director 250-812-7118 – info@victoriatrackseries.ca

S2 status means that elite riders who race in the events can gain world ranking points that count towards competing for national team places and ultimately the 2012 Olympic games in London. A total of 2500 UCI points will be up for offer and are expected to attract top riders from around the continent.
