2010 Harry’s Spring Run-Off 8K Results & Reports

Posted on Sunday, March 7th, 2010 | 0 Comments | Category: - Running, Race Reports, Results

For results from today’s race click here.

BC Athletics has again written a great summary report from the event and although we don’t like to copy on this site the first part of that report is included below…

============

Kenyan Willy Kimosop, last years Sun Run winner who claimed to have done very little training through the winter while studying in Lethbridge, followed Ontario’s Dylan Wykes for 7.8K of Harry’s Spring Run-Off 8K in Vancouver. With the finish in sight, Kimosop demonstrated that he’d lost little of his track speed as he out-gunned Wykes to come home victorious by 2 seconds in 23:43. Behind Wykes, Victoria’s Scott Simpson was an isolated third in 24:41. Local Jerry Ziak finished fourth in 25:06, ahead of another Victoria athlete David Jackson, fifth in 25:09, and first master Mark Bomba in 25:54.

Gary Robbins’ HURT Race Report – A 100 Mile Tale

Posted on Sunday, January 31st, 2010 | 1 Comment | Category: - Running, News and Happenings, Race Reports, Ultras

Gary Robbins’ long awaited race report from the Hawaii HURT Trail 100-mile Endurance Run is now done! Many thanks to Gary for allowing us to post on Trainharder…

By the way be sure to check out Gary’s blog here.

=============================

Alright, so where to begin, where to end, how to recap it all so that people actually want to read about running 100 damn miles…

Hawaii. I’d never been before. I simply can not wait to go back again! It goes without saying that the place is amazing, but couple that with an incredible racing experience and a wonderful group of individuals associated with the race on all sides, directing, volunteering, and racing, and before the event even began, I knew I’d be longing to return again soon.

Quick background with my 100 mile experience. This was my 3rd 100 miler. In my three attempts at the distance I have now won two races, set two course records, and had one colossal melt down in the sauna that was Western States. HURT was by far the best race I’ve EVER HAD! I feel like I’ve finally learned from most of my ‘rookie’ mistakes and put forth my best possible effort in Hawaii. From training, to tapering, to fueling, things were almost flawless with this one.

As Maurice Tarrant shattered the Canadian record in his 80-plus age group during Sunday’s Prairie Inn Pioneer 8K race, he proved that competitive running knows no age barrier.

The Victoria resident beat the previous record by a whopping eight minutes with a time of 38 minutes, 15 seconds.

“That’s one minute per kilometre,” said Bob Reid, director of the Vancouver Island Runners Association and president of the Royal Victoria Marathon. “On the track, if you shave a tenth of a second off a record you’ve done well. But by minutes, that’s incredible.”

TC10K to Host BC 10K Road Championships

Posted on Monday, December 14th, 2009 | 0 Comments | Category: - Running, News and Happenings

victoria-marathon_15(Victoria, BC – Monday, December 14, 2009). The 21st Annual TC10K has been chosen by BC Athletics to host the 2010 BC 10K Road Running Championships for junior, senior and masters runners, for both men and women. The TC10K will take place on Sunday, April 25, 2010.

“The TC10K has a proven record of attracting the best road runners in BC, and producing some of the quickest 10K times in Canada, for all age groups,” said Maurice Wilson, Technical Manager, Road and Cross Country Running at BC Athletics. “For twenty years the Victoria International Running Society, organizers of the TC10K, has staged a first class event, making it a natural partner to host the provincial championship. The Championship is open to all junior, senior and masters members of BC Athletics.”

The TC10K consistently attracts an elite field of runners – during the last five years Steve Osaduik, Ryan Hayden, Lucy Smith and Lisa Harvey have competed. In 2009 the men’s race was won by Willy Kimosop in 29:29, with Kathy Butler winning the women’s race in 34:01. The course records, however, still stand from the last decade – Simon Chenowya (1995) in 28:47, and Angela Chalmers (1994) in 33:03.

The North Face® Canadian Death Race

Posted on Wednesday, August 5th, 2009 | 0 Comments | Category: - Running, News and Happenings, Race Reports, Results, Ultras

For nearly a decade, elite racers have come here to cheat Death in one of the world’s toughest adventure races. The 125 km course begins and ends on a 4200 foot plateau, passes over three mountain summits and includes 17,000 feet of elevation change and a major river crossing at the spectacular Hell’s Gate canyon at the confluence of the Smoky and Sulphur Rivers.

The 2009 North Face® Canadian Death Race was run from August 1st to 3rd and for the first time was won by a non-Canadian.

Mega-endurance athlete and bestselling author Dean Karnazes was there (finished second!) and has a great write up of his experiences…

Deathfest 2009

Uncle. Enough already. The Canadian Death Race definitely lived up to its name. Absolutely murderous. Completely awesome!

I’ve long wanted to do the Canadian Death Race, but it always falls less than two weeks after the Badwater Ultramarathon, and I’ve been concerned that I wouldn’t have ample time to recover. This year I came to the realization that my schedule isn’t going to get any less busy, so I might as well attempt both.

Going into the Death Race, I had three goals in mind. In priority, they were…

Gary Robbins and His Long Overdue Western States Report

Posted on Sunday, July 12th, 2009 | 0 Comments | Category: - Running, Race Reports

The following race report from Gary Robbins recounts his experience racing in the legendary Western States Endurance Run, which is 100 miles of off-road torture through California’s backcountry. Gary is one of Canada’s premier endurance runners and gives an entertaining account of his adventure.

=============

Here it is, finally, my 2009 Tour De France race report…err, umm, oh yeah, Western States race report…has it really been almost two weeks already!

The Drive Down took us almost two full days, including one stop in ummm, I can’t even remember where we spent the first night? Somewhere south of Portland. We smuggled Melcher into the hotel room to save on the additional $3 charge for a third person, which would of course be added to the post race beer fund!

Victoria Runner Wins Scottish 10km Road Championship

Posted on Monday, June 22nd, 2009 | 0 Comments | Category: - Running, Race Reports

Elite Victoria runner and Trainharder blogger Marilyn Arsenault has schooled the Scottmen on their own turf, winning the 10k road race championships in Balloch, Scotland with a time of 35:39.

Following is the first part of her race writeup:

img_4482

As usual, Juice and I had a restless pre-race night. It was more to do with a warm room than anything. The windows only opened a crack and the temperature outside was not exactly cool anyway. Regardless, I felt fine because the sleep I had the night before was stellar. Breakfast was included with our room and was delivered to our door. I brought my Bodum so we had coffee, croissant and cereal. My belly wasn’t feeling all that great…travel seems to screw around with my plumbing. We walked over to the race start and grabbed our timing chips. We were so close we were able to go back to our room, change into our gear, attend to last minute bathroom needs and get to the race start with no probs.

Another Miwok Race Report

Posted on Sunday, May 10th, 2009 | 0 Comments | Category: - Running, Race Reports, Ultras

Here’s another Miwok 100k Ultra race report, this one from Darin Bentley of BC…

======

This race is renowned for it’s beautiful views of San Francisco and the ocean from it’s highest points. We, on this day, however, saw none of it. The weather called for a 30% chance of rain and cloudy conditions. It got a little worse than that.

I flew down to Oakland the day before the race and was met by John Brooks, fellow Canada Ultraman finisher. I actually crewed for John at the Ultraman two years ago. In return, although not necessary, he would pick me up, let me stay at his house, and crew for me along the race course. One of the first things John said to me was if I had any poison oak soap. Never even knowing there was such a thing I said no. I guess there’s a bit of the stuff out on the course but it doesn’t react with you until a couple days afterwards so after the race you shower with this stuff. I did just that and still have no effects, thankfully, because it doesn’t sound like much fun if you get a lot on you.

We went to his place and met his terrific wife, Maureen, kids Cody, Austin, and Wyatt then went to get some stuff for dinner. They were commenting on the rainy weather being more like February than May and that they never got this much rain around this time of year.

Figures.

Nicola Gildersleeve’s Miwok Race Report

Posted on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 | 0 Comments | Category: - Running, Race Reports, Ultras

Last weekend elite ultra runner Nicola Gildersleeve of North Vancouver traveled south to compete in the famed Miwok 100K Trail Race. Following is an excerpt from her race report:

==================

Today was one of the best racing learning experiences of my life. A lot of things happened today, where if I were more prepared, the outcome may have changed, or maybe not…

I had a great sleep last night and woke to the sound of my alarm at 3:30am. I quickly ate breakfast and then got my race gear on. I had forgotten my heart rate monitor at home (I could of sworn I put it in my bag) which of course happens when you pack last minute (lessen # 1 learned). I helped put sport shield (similiar to body glide but less ‘vaselinie’) all over Peter’s back, which I normally do myself because my camelbak chafes against my HR monitor, but because I didn’t have it, I passed on the lube (lesson # 2- always wear body glide). We got to the start at 5pm, thanks to Peter’s parents. It was pitch black and all you could hear was waves crashing in the background. It was windy! After checking in, getting everything ready, all of the starters were off to the beach for a start in the sand. Everyone headed into single track trail like one big giant ant farm. We quickly got onto a road that went 3 miles uphill. It was hot, and I quickly drew down my arm warmers and took my gloves off. I was happy about this weather because even if it did rain today (which is called for “light rain”) I would be comfortable.

2009 Times Colonist 10K Results and Write-ups

Posted on Sunday, April 26th, 2009 | 0 Comments | Category: - Running, Race Reports, Results, Write-ups

From the Victoria Times Colonist – Perfect running conditions reward the thousands at 20th Annual TC 10K; Kenyan, Olympian win – Willy Kimosop, an elite-class runner from Kenya, won the 20th Annual Times Colonist 10K Sunday. Kimosop, who was among almost 10,000 runners who came out for the race, completed the course in 29 minutes and 29 seconds, not a record but the first time in six years that it’s been run in under 30 minutes. The TC10K record time of 28:47 was set in 1995 by another Kenyan, Simon Chenowya.

Also, here’s what we’ve found on the blog-waves so far…

  • Running ToughTimes Colonist 10KI have been remiss on working on this race report. I just haven’t been able to find the time to sit down and do it so a somewhat summarized version will have to suffice.
  • JarheadThe 20th Annual Times Colonist 10K – With a record number of participants the Times Colonist 10K solidified its status as the second-largest 10K in Canada behind Vancouver’s 40,000+ participant Sun Run…
  • Dirge RhetoricTC10k – Anyone speak Swahili or whatever language the little guys who ran out front today communicate with? I was trying to communicate with Willy Kimosop to get his race number from him and for him to autograph it…
  • The Running DivaHooray for Juice! – Yesterday was a day off from running but I did a good session of strength and core work. Juice and I were up bright and early this morning (after a late night with the opera last night) and met Dave, Jon, Kathy and Matt near the TC start-line before the race…
  • Woman on the Run - Drama at the finish line – For each one of the 12,600 people who ran or walked the TC10K, there is a story. Certainly, there is the headline achievement by elite athletes – but I’m thinking of those whose drama is recounted at the dinner table, not on a speaking circuit.
  • Triing in Victoria - 40:20 so close yet so far!!! - Well, I set a new PB of 40:20, not quite what I was looking for, but still a good run.
  • What’s up with ELM?HURRAY ELM WOMEN! – CONGRATULATIONS to the crew of 17 ELM Women who raced in the TC 10K today in Victoria!
