NB Cross Country Invitational
Here are a few photos of today's race at Beacon Hill Park, won by Jerry Ziak. Unfortunately most of my shots of the womens' race did not turn out well, won by Lucy Smith, with Marilyn Arsenault taking 3rd (can't remember who was second); and only a few of the mens race were of reasonable quality.
Ased was competing, just coming back from illness, but after 4km of hard work, pulled out. Todd Healy was also out, but ran through a hole after about 3km and twisted his knee, forcing him also to pull out.
As for me, I contemplated doing the race myself, but I was a bit wary of it after a hard workout on Thursday. Instead I did a track workout focussing on speed rather than longer aerobic efforts: 800, 400, 800, 400, 400, 400, 200, 200. Times were 2:31, 1:09, 2:29, 1:08, 1:09, 1:08, 31s, 31s. The idea was to do my 400s after the 800 with a 30s rest and to do them at a faster pace than the eights, and to finish up with some quick 200s. Total distance including warmup and warmdown, about 11km. Being unaccustomed to that sort of speed (esp those 200s), my legs do feel a bit sore right now.

And I thought I had bad fashion sense! Actually I'm sure these high school lads, warming up for the start of the mens' race, are very popular with the women (some race categories were combined due to small numbers).
The main bunch charging up the hill on the first lap. Craig Odermatt to the right and in the white singlet.
John Crouch strikes a pensive pose while Jerry Ziak powers off the front of the field.
Three unidentified runners (may be Paul O'Callahan on the left).
Ian Hallam running strongly (left in black singlet).
David Jackson, Graham Cocksedge, and unidentified runner (l to r), approach a lonely dandelion. Graham ended up third with a blazing final kick while David was fourth on the heels of a high mileage week in preparation for the Chicago marathon in three weeks.
The Z-man flies by the yellow lovely.
